Financial integrity is achieved when daily actions align with financial plans and commitments, ensuring consistency in decision-making and operations.  These principles build trust between leadership and employees. Whether it’s employee records, financial documents, or contracts, proper document retention practices are essential for keeping your business organized and compliant with regulations.  One of the first steps in effective document retention is establishing a clear and consistent filing system. This can be done through simple "Filing 101" techniques such as creating clearly labeled folders, using standardized naming conventions, and setting up a logical hierarchy for storing documents. These basic practices will help ensure that documents are easy to find when needed and that important files are not lost in the shuffle.  While the manual method of organizing documents may have worked in the past, today, businesses are shifting toward automation. By leveraging technology, you can create a more efficient system that automatically organizes and categorizes documents. Document management software allows you to digitize records, making them searchable, easier to store, and more secure. Moving to an automated system also ensures that your records are accessible remotely, improving collaboration and reducing the risk of physical document loss.  Another critical aspect of document retention is understanding your legal obligations. For example, the IRS has strict guidelines on how long you need to retain records, and keeping accurate employee records is not only essential for compliance but also for smooth day-to-day operations.  So, ask yourself: Do you have someone dedicated to managing your document retention, or are you still stuck in the "dinosaur age," where everything is kept in physical form and you’re at risk for being disorganized?   • Shouldn't Smart Homes Have Smart Infrastructure?

    In today’s connected homes—where Smart TVs, home hubs, IoT gadgets, and Wi-Fi-enabled everything  are the norm—there’s a quiet race happening behind the scenes. The dream? A single, unified hub to control it all. The reality? More often than not: 20 different controllers to rule most of them  (insert obligatory XKCD panel  here).  Over the past two decades, the proliferation of devices that can be accessed by and controlled over the Internet has exploded, thanks in part to several competing (and complementary) wireless technologies: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Z-Wave, and Zigbee. These protocols have made it easy for consumers to install connected devices themselves and control them through web apps and/or smartphone apps, and in general, they work pretty well.    But they all suffer from the same limitation. They rely on data sent over radio frequencies through air. While this type of data communication has proven to be commercially successful, this has primarily been a factor of its ease of deployment and not due to its speed or reliability. Think about it: Would the modern telecom industry have taken off if we still had to rely on hardwired lines for every  transmission? Of course not. Wireless is fast and flexible, which makes it perfect for mobile environments.   But in a home—a permanent, controllable structure—do limitations on writing really exist? Are these limitations just failures to plan appropriately? There’s no good reason not  to install low voltage wiring—or at least leave room for it through conduit systems—in new construction homes. It’s relatively inexpensive, it’s easy to plan for during early stages, and the benefits are significant.      The Case for Wired: Speed, Reliability, and Future-Proofing   Wired devices benefit from a robustness and speed of signal that shames even advanced wireless devices. When we discuss wired signal speeds, we are referring to speeds in the Mbps or Gbps (megabits to gigabits) range.   While only Wi-Fi can boast speeds in the Mbps (megabit) range, the remaining three technologies--in practical applications--generally see speeds in the Kbps (kilobits) range. We are talking about wired speeds that are thousands of times faster than their wireless approximates. Furthermore, data loss over wireless signals creates latency that can degrade the device usage experience, often to a point where the device is unusable (ask anyone who has mounted a Wi-Fi camera on the exterior of a brick building—yes, that is a setup for failure, but what other options does your average homeowner have?)     What Builders Could—and Should—Be Doing   Production homes built from similar specs could easily add a standard, low-voltage infrastructure. Imagine homes pre-wired (or at least conduit-ready) for:   Ethernet connections  to every room for Smart TVs and workstations   Camera-ready receptacle boxes  at common mounting points   Low-voltage sensor wiring  for doors, windows, and motion sensors   A centralized panel  for routers, switches, hubs, and power management    This would dramatically improve the homeowner experience when installing and using connected devices. It would also decrease the technological waste we suffer from as a society by creating environments where devices work as intended, instead of getting tossed out because of signal issues or latency problems.  In summary, smart homes aren’t going anywhere. But if we want them to be more than just “cool gadgets,” we need to build the right infrastructure from the start. Low voltage wiring may not be glamorous, but it’s foundational. And it’s time it became standard—regardless of the home's price tag.

  • Are You Compromised?

    In today’s digital age, ensuring that your organization’s sensitive data stays secure is crucial. Data Loss Prevention (DLP) is all about making sure you’re not accidentally sending out confidential information, whether it’s through email, cloud storage, or other communication channels. Implementing strong DLP strategies can protect your organization from data breaches, inadvertent leaks, and compliance violations.  One of the most effective ways to prevent data loss is through encryption. By encrypting sensitive data both in transit and at rest, you ensure that even if unauthorized access occurs, the information remains unreadable. This acts as a powerful barrier to protect your organization from malicious attacks and accidental disclosures.  Another key feature in preventing data loss is having prompts like “Are you sure you want to send this?” These notifications can act as a safeguard, giving employees a second chance to confirm that they’re not unintentionally sharing confidential or sensitive data outside the organization. It’s a simple yet effective tool to reduce human error, which is often the root cause of data leaks.  However, it’s not just about preventing digital leaks. If your organization is still relying heavily on paper documents, it's time to ask why. Paper-based processes can be more vulnerable to data loss and harder to track. Transitioning to digital systems makes it easier to implement DLP measures, such as encrypted file storage, secure access controls, and automated alerts. Going electronic can streamline your processes and make protecting your data more efficient.  In conclusion, preventing data loss is a proactive effort. By leveraging encryption, utilizing helpful prompts, and moving away from paper-driven processes, you can safeguard your organization's sensitive data and ensure that it stays in the right hands.

  • Can Builders Think Like Venture Capitalists?

    When Lennar invested in ICON’s 3D-printed homes, it signaled that venture capital had finally noticed residential construction. However, most investors underestimate the complexity of the homebuilding ecosystem where trust, regulation, and risk define the pace of change far more than technology. Unfortunately, many venture bets in housing fail because when people live inside the product, you can’t “move fast and break things,” as is the norm for other types of product innovations. Additionally, in the homebuilding industry, it’s essential to account for the real-world constraints of trades, suppliers, inspectors, and financing structures, and many don’t do this. The irony is that homebuilders have always been investors, they just rarely think like it. Every new plan, product, or process is a bet on time, cost, and performance. But most builders make those bets reactively, chasing rebates or code requirements instead of purposefully funding innovation. Venture capitalists, by contrast, make small, strategic bets on the future, knowing that a few will shape entire industries. Imagine if builders approached every model home or prototype community the same way: as a living test site for innovation and learning. The result isn’t disruption for disruption’s sake. It’s smarter evolution. The next revolution in homebuilding won’t come from a shiny new technology. It will come from systems that can actually be adopted, scaled, and trusted. That’s not just investment, that’s stewardship. And the builders who think like investors won’t just build homes, they’ll build the future of the industry itself.

  • Is My Home Visitable?

    Have you ever hosted a gathering or family dinner and wondered whether all your guests would be able to comfortably enter and move around your home? Or perhaps you or someone you know has mobility challenges that make visiting new places a concern.  That’s where visitability comes in.  Visitability is the concept of designing homes so that people with mobility concerns can easily visit , even if they don’t live there. Unlike accessibility, which typically follows formal regulations and focuses on long-term independent living, visitability is guided by voluntary design principles that make short-term visits smoother, safer, and more inclusive.  A visitable home allows everyone – regardless of mobility level – to enter, move about the main floor, and use a bathroom without facing major barriers.  The Three Core Elements of Visitability:  Zero-step entry into the home  Wide hallways (minimum 36") and doorways (minimum 32" clear opening) on the main floor  A main floor bathroom (half or full) that can be accessed by someone using a wheelchair  Designing for Visitability  While these features are easiest to incorporate into new construction, many aspects can also be thoughtfully integrated into existing homes through renovations. The key isn’t necessarily added cost, it’s intentional design. Proper planning and coordination during the design phase, especially around entryways and foundation details, can make all the difference.  Why Builders and Homebuyers Should Care  Visitability is more than a trend, it’s a meaningful way to make homes more welcoming and future-ready. Builders, designers, and homeowners alike can champion this approach, ensuring that homes are not only beautiful, but are inclusive for everyone who enters... regardless of how they get there.

  • Where's the Progress?

    The homebuilding industry stands at a crossroads. For decades, we’ve talked about innovation, yet we continue to build homes in much the same way that we did a generation ago. Labor shortages persist. Material costs climb. Energy codes tighten. Homeownership drifts further from reach. And still, we wait for someone else to lead. I believe that it’s time to stop waiting. The solutions already exist: smarter wall systems, integrated HVAC platforms, digital design tools, and new materials ready for scale. What’s missing isn’t technology. It’s courage. Real innovation begins when builders decide to take responsibility for the future, to test, to share, and to build differently, even when it’s uncomfortable. The next generation of homeowners isn’t asking for luxury; they’re asking for homes that perform better, cost less to own, and stand the test of time. Let’s challenge ourselves... every builder, supplier, and trade partner... to treat innovation not as an experiment, but as a responsibility. Let’s make progress something we do together. Not someday, but now. The future of homebuilding depends on it.

  • What's the Secret Sauce?

    At IBACOS, we visit over 130 large builder divisions each year, and one question we frequently hear is, “What’s the secret to maintaining consistent quality across my market?” Among these divisions, some have cracked the code. The truth is, there’s no secret or magic involved—just the consistent execution of daily behaviors that drive quality, paired with a relentless commitment to learning from mistakes and continually improving the small details that make all the difference. Darren Hardy, author of The Compound Effect , emphasizes how consistently doing the small things right can lead to significant results over time. As a homebuilder, you can never afford to shift your construction process into cruise control. Training your team and trade partners to meet your standards is an ongoing process—every day is a training day. Every home you build must be built in full compliance with the detailed standards you’ve set. If you simply rely on your trades to “build to industry standards,” that is exactly what you will get, standard—not exceptional. Your construction standards must be clearly documented in your plans and scopes, communicated, and agreed upon with your trade partners. When crews arrive, expectations must be reaffirmed. New team members in crews need to be trained, and experienced workers reminded. Once the work is done, those standards must be inspected and verified. Every home, every day. As I mentioned, there’s no magic—just the consistent practice of holding trades accountable.

  • How Does Code Compliance Affect Innovation?

    The development and commercialization of new products and systems in homebuilding is critical to the advancement of the industry. However, builders that choose to implement new innovations are likely to encounter barriers along the way, especially during the code compliance process. While building codes can be motivational to the homebuilding industry on a broad level by ultimately requiring more stringent levels of performance in a home, the code development and adoption process is often a slow and delayed process in many areas. This reality frequently leads to the innovation process outpacing the code development and adoption process in most jurisdictions. It simply takes time for new products and systems to be addressed in the published code, either through specific language or by referencing new standards.   The International Residential Code (IRC) does include a “catch-all” provision for designs or components that fall outside of the written code. Using the 2021 IRC as an example, section R104.11 (Alternative Materials, Design and Methods of Construction and Equipment) grants code officials the authority to approve a design or method of construction not specifically prescribed by the code. This provision, however, relies on code officials – and ultimately the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) – to be open to innovation. At the end of the day, new products and systems are best served by specific code language, referenced standards, and code evaluation reports.   So, what should an innovation-minded builder or design professional do if the product or system they would like to deploy has outpaced the code process? Here are three key recommendations: 1.       Work directly with code officials and the AHJ to understand the innovative product or system that is intended for use on a project. Help them to understand the innovation itself as well as the intended use of the innovation. 2.       Communicate with the product or system developer/manufacturer to understand context, case studies, and any data that might be helpful to demonstrate implementation of the innovation. This will help the project team as well as the AHJ to minimize risk. 3.       Get involved with the code adoption process in the local jurisdiction. If you have an interest in seeing new technologies directly addressed in the code, use your voice as a member of the public to influence decision makers.   Code compliance is often riddled with ambiguity and gray areas, leaving substantial room for interpretation. Homebuilding is not always open to innovation and risk at every level, but open communication, education, and detailed planning can help to smooth out the process.

  • When Did You Last Ask Your Trades?

    I recently participated in an industry workshop where +/-30 professionals from many facets of construction gathered to help craft the research agenda for a prestigious higher education institution. I was invited to help represent residential construction, and was surrounded by engineers, architects, planners, policy makers, software providers, data experts, automation leaders, researchers, faculty, and government program administrators. The session affirmed that one of the core issues facing residential construction is not unique to homebuilding: The skilled labor pool is shrinking, what do we do? The conversation was stimulating with much discussion surrounding robotics, data and AI. Yet throughout, I felt that the segment that is most affected by the industry’s efforts to ‘solve the problem’ were missing: the tradesmen and women. It was as if those of us in the room – most of whom held at least one post-secondary degree – felt empowered to speak on behalf of several million trade workers (The Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America, Inc.). Regardless your view on the future of manufactured housing, component construction or automated building, this industry will still require a workforce that our industry currently calls “trades.” For a number of factors, including liability and industry volatility, I do not anticipate a wholesale migration away from the current general contractor/subcontractor relationship. Will there be successful industry examples of “vertical construction?” Sure. However, I’m not convinced that this will become mainstream in my lifetime. “But look at the automobile industry,” you may exclaim. True. There are lessons there for construction. However, by 1961 - the time robotics began making a real impact in U.S. auto manufacturing - the Big Three (General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler) had a combined market share of over 85% (American Enterprise Institute). Don’t get me wrong. The questions posed at this research roundtable should be asked and answers should be pursued. For decades, the construction industry has suffered from record-low investment in R+D. At the same time, let’s not be naïve: trades are vital to our industry’s success today… and tomorrow. For those of us looking to the future, we should be asking the trades these same questions.

  • How Important Are Our Trade Partners?

    Homebuilders build homes, right? Nope, trades do. Typically, builders’ jobsite superintendents or project managers manage the building process and coordinate with multiple different trade partners, usually sourced through a bidding process. In most markets, builders adhere to a 120-200-day build cycle, taking an empty lot to a finished house within this timeframe. Depending on factors such as the size of home, design, or location this can be incredibly challenging. To achieve this, it is especially important that the builders develop good relationships with their trade partners.   In our work in the field with production homebuilders, we see lots of interactions -- both positive and negative. Just like any relationship, these partnerships require work. When mistakes happen, it’s easy to point fingers and assign blame. But the world isn’t perfect, and in order to build a house, a few nails are going to get bent. Working through the challenges together benefits both the builder and the trades.   Part of our job is helping to train the builder – and the trades who work for them – how to incorporate building science into their construction practices. In addition to this, in order to create a great working environment, we encourage builders to keep the jobsite safe and to build rapport with the contractors. People go to work wanting to do a good job, and to go home feeling accomplished.   Finally, be upfront with what you expect from your trades, and when they fall short, explain how to improve... and when you’re happy with the final product, reward all those involved! With the rising cost of homes, people are staying in their homes much longer and it is extremely important that houses are built to be efficient and durable for years to come... and the only way to accomplish this is to work together.

  • Is Santa a Building Scientist?

    On first reflection, this may seem like a ridiculous question - but it's Christmas, and that’s always a good time of year to ponder. When you consider the scale of Santa’s overall job, the diversity of homeowner expectations, the tight time constraints, and the variation in climate zones and home designs he must contend with, the answer to the question is surely a resounding yes. A master's degree in building science and solid, in-the-field home construction experience must be among the most fundamental Santa employment requirements from the North Pole Christmas Delivery Company.  So, let’s contemplate the Santa experience further. He drives a large, red sled usually pulled by nine reindeer. With a gift-laden vehicle, a team of large well-fed animals, and Santa himself as no lightweight, landing and taking off on a snow-covered roof is no winter walk in the park. A global familiarity with roof designs and the relevant loading constraints and pitch variations, plus a robust understanding of the use of different roofing materials for a safe landing and take-off are all essential, and of course, let’s not forget compliance with those mystical OSHA standards. All making the need for fundamental building science knowledge and homebuilding experience, only all too apparent. Then of course, there is the challenge of the chimney itself. Classic chimney designs bring a mix of different fire sources and enormous variations in age, scale, and size. Things are further complicated by different capping systems and internal shafts that each have their own distinct friction coefficients.  All affecting chimney entry point complexity, the rate of Santa’s descent, and the individual number of trips needed to complete each of his Christmas gift-bearing tasks.  A heavy-duty calculator, hanging off his large belt, and that same building science knowledge are both vital in Santa hitting his quota, and productively getting each delivery job via the chimney done effectively. Other homes then may require out-of-the box thinking. What about the all-electric homes with no chimneys? This opens a whole new need for technical knowledge and insight for Santa that must be readily supplied by his tech savvy elves. Now he must take on the challenge of quietly entering and leaving the home through the more traditional route of a door or a window. This requires him to rely on detailed building product technology knowledge to overcome an array of different home locking and AI-enabled security systems to ensure a rapid, safe, and undetected Christmas night entry and departure.  And last but not least, Santa resides in a unique environment: the North Pole. This location poses several challenges, including extreme cold, limited resources, and isolation. To overcome these obstacles, Santa employs advanced engineering principles to design and construct his workshop, ensuring that it remains functional and efficient despite harsh conditions. Moreover, Santa's workshop is a marvel of innovation. It is not merely a place for toy production, but is a fully-equipped facility that incorporates the latest technologies. The case is clearly made. There is absolutely no doubt that Santa has an extensive background in building science and a great deal of in-field home construction experience. How else would he be able to get the job done? The only other option would be for us to start believing in the power of some special Christmastime spirit and magic...
