Opting to build higher quality and higher performance homes can give a homebuilder the edge, even in difficult markets. Wathen-Castanos Hybrid Homes successfully implemented a sweeping quality management program in one of the most challenging real estate markets in the country.
We help homebuilders plan, execute and measure the success of their change efforts. We determine which strategies make the most sense for a specific builder and their markets, and then customize them for every stage of that company’s transition to higher performance building.
Whether a homebuilder is trying to reach ENERGY STAR, LEED for Homes, NAHB Green, or some other standard, we understand how to get them there profitably and efficiently.
In 2009, Wathen-Castanos Hybrid Homes (WCHH) opted to become the high performance builder in their competitive central California housing market and called on IBACOS to help them.
The IBACOS team worked with WCHH from mid-2009 to the end of 2010 on the training, implementation and support of high performance homebuilding and quality management techniques. Quality criteria were based on the Baldrige-based National Housing Quality Award (NHQA), the Energy Value Housing Award (EVHA), and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Builders Challenge.
By the end of 2010, WCHH had won the NHQA Bronze and EVHA Builder of the Year awards and had improved in every category of the NHQA Self-Assessment. They also built their first Zero Net Electrical home and now offer them as part of their product lineup.
In 2011, WCHH won the NHQA Silver award, the National Housing Quality Award, the EVHA Gold award for New Moderate Climate Production Homes, and the EVHA Builder of the Year. They have grown from building 188 homes in 2009 to a projected 250 in 2012.
