Senior Building Performance Specialist – Troubleshooting Focus

Department: Builders Services

Position / Pay Level: Dependent upon experience

Reporting Relationships: Reports to the IBACOS Services Team Manager

The Senior Building Performance Specialist (SBPS) is a member of the IBACOS technical staff with a minimum of 5 years of experience in relevant technical roles. The SBPS's work focuses on enabling homebuilders to improve the quality of their home construction practices to increase home performance and reduce business risk. Backed by a team grounded in the fundamentals of building science, the SBPS supports builders and their trade contractors in identifying a builder's risk, investigating construction issues and developing Best Practices™ solutions in construction quality.

Primary Job Duties
  • Drawing/specifications review of production homebuilders’ homes to identify construction quality risks.
  • Field walks of production homebuilders’ homes to identify construction quality risks.
  • Field walks of production homebuilders’ homes to troubleshoot construction quality issues, identifying root cause(s) across design, material selection and/or installation.
  • Development and field communication of remediation approaches to fix construction quality issues.
  • Development and field communication of design, material selection and/or installation to avoid future construction quality issues.
  • Writing and reviewing technical (documentation) reports.
  • Field testing and diagnostics of home performance to affirm construction quality root causes and/or verify remediation approaches.
  • Investigation and analysis of building materials or products, systems and construction assemblies.
  • Management of technical consultants and resources.
  • Research and investigation into technical resources and emerging scientific references.
  • Must be willing to travel up to 50%.
Required Skills / Experience
  • Bachelors Degree in Architecture, Engineering or related field, and actively pursuing licensure.
  • A professional Engineer or Architect license is preferred
  • Minimum of 5-10 years field experience with residential builders and trade contractors.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.

Building Performance Specialist – Troubleshooting Focus

Reporting Relationships: Reports to the IBACOS Services Team Manager

The Building Performance Specialist (BPS) is a member of the IBACOS technical staff with a minimum of 2 years of experience in relevant technical roles. The BPS’s work focuses on enabling homebuilders to improve the quality of their home construction. The BPS plays a key role in evaluating construction quality issues and coaching the builder to implement Best Practices. The BPS will conduct field investigations and diagnostics of houses with building science related issues, and also providing design and construction support to builders and trade contractors. The BPS will also be involved with efforts to research and document best practices in the homebuilding industry.

Primary Job Duties
  • Field walks of production homebuilders’ homes to troubleshoot and coach them through quality issues.
  • Analysis of homebuilders’ construction practices to identify construction quality issues and best practices.
  • Writing and reviewing technical reports.
  • Conduct field testing and diagnostics of homes.
  • Configuration and installation of monitoring equipment.
  • Investigation of new building products, systems and construction assemblies.
  • Development and drafting of construction Best Practice Details for homebuilders
  • Must be willing to travel up to 50%.

Research Intern/Co–op

Department: IBACOS Research

Position / Pay Level:

Reporting Relationships:

Overview: The Research Internship will provide support to the Research Team in the investigation of residential building systems. The position will provide support to data acquisition and analysis, building system and whole house modeling, analyzing and preparing residential drawings, and field studies. Additionally, the position will perform technical and market research related to a diverse array of residential topics.

  • Analysis of monitored data collected form high performance homes built throughout the US
  • Assisting in literature searches associated with advanced residential building technologies and systems
  • Assisting in the modeling of advanced systems using a variety of building energy and transient modeling software packages
  • Assisting Senor Staff in the development of presentations for the residential construction industry
  • Assisting in the development, installation, programming, and calibration of data acquisition equipment in high performance houses and research houses throughout the US

Required Skills / Experience

  • Currently in a Bachelors degree program in Architecture, Engineering, Building Science or a related technical discipline
  • Some experience with residential construction
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills

Service Intern/Co–op

Department: IBACOS Services

The IBACOS Services team engages with production homebuilders to perform 3rd-party construction quality assessments of field practices and provides consult on technical issues arising out of inadequate system design, engineering or construction. The Services Team Internship will provide support to the IBACOS Services Team as we work with production homebuilders to improve the quality and performance of the homes that they build. Interns will be engaged in a variety of work activities in the Services Team, similar to the following items:

  • Development of best practice design and construction details.
  • Technical and market research related to a diverse array of residential topics.
  • Support for other consulting work and Assessments that the Services Team completes with production homebuilders.
  • Support Coaching on construction research and developing technical reports.

Required Skills / Experience

  • Currently in a Bachelors degree in Architecture, Engineering, Building Science or a related technical discipline.
  • Some experience with residential construction (field experience with builders and trade contractors a plus).
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong knowledge of AutoCad LT 2005.
