Plug-in Compact Fluorescent Lamps Plug-in compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) lamps range in size from 5W to 70W. The ballast for the light is incorporated into the fixture, and most lamps can be used only with the specific ballast that is designed for them. To assure the proper lamp/ballast match, the base of most plug-in CFLs has a unique shape. The luminous element may be a twin tube, a double twin tube, or a triple tube configuration. |

The high performance lighting designs in this guide are based on a relatively limited number of plug-in CFL types (13W, 18W, and 26W) to help limit the number of variations to work with. Many of the specified fixtures are available with the dimming option that incorporates a special dimming ballast. Depending on the specific fixture, dimming may or may not require a special plug-in CFL as well. Recommended Specifications Dimming: A proper ballast in the fixture allows for dimming with most plug-in CFLs. Dimensions: The lamp recommended by the fixture manufacturer should be used, as there are important differences in lamp size and base configuration. Each lamp must match the fixture ballast. Cost and Availability There is a range of costs with plug-in CFLs. The most widely used 13W lamp may be obtained for as little as $1 to $2 whereas, at the upper end, higher wattage, dimmable lamps may cost $20 or more. The 13, 18, and 26W lamps that are predominantly used in HPL designs may range in cost from $8 to $11. These lamps in the desired 3000 K color temperature and 80 + CRI are generally available from electrical supply houses, not hardware dealers, and may have to be ordered. Ordering usually is a one- to two-week process. Plug-in CFLs are available in a range of sizes and configurations from major lamp manufacturers including GE, Sylvania, and Phillips. |
