Surface mounted fixtures imply aesthetic choices. Listed below are a number of fixtures that meet the requirements for direct lighting in this guide. There are many more available that may be considered satisfactory for HPL purposes as long as they offer the same electrical characteristics as the examples shown here. Many of these fixtures are part of a family that may offer numerous lamping configurations such as: 1, 2, 3, or 4-13 CFL, 18 W or 26 W CFL or circiline lamps, any of these may be good choices depending on the area to be illuminated.

Note: There are many T-5 under cabinet fluorescent fixtures available. Most use the old T-5 technology in fixtures of nominal 1' to 4' length. Typically, these use lamp combinations of 8 W and 13 W T-5s. This guide focuses on fixtures that use the new (metric) T-5 technology that has roughly twice the light output (per foot) of the old T-5s. Comparison of old and new T-5 lamps is made in the Linear Fluorescent Lamps section - Table 2.
Under cabinet fixtures are also available that use T-8 and T-12 lamps. Because of their greater thickness they are more difficult to shield in under cabinet installations and thus are not recommended for HPL.

Recessed downlights with white reflectors (direct lighting), clear reflectors (recessed lighting), wall washers (indirect lighting) or wet location (all designs-bathroom), are available from numerous manufacturers. Due to their current limited use in residential construction they typically must be ordered through electrical suppliers or lighting shops. This HPL guide recommendations concentrate on a limited number of CFL wattages (13, 18 and 26) to reduce the number of lamp sizes needed for re-lamping.
Recessed downlights are available in several technical variations, each with specific performance capabilities. A "standard" unit is intended for new construction in locations where there is no requirement for air tightness or insulation contact. Fixtures noted as airtight (AT) provide air sealing of the ceiling opening and typically are listed as meeting Washington State requirements. It is very important to use AT rated fixtures wherever the airtight boundary of the house is penetrated. One common location of this type of fixture is the upper floor ceilings of the house.
A second form of improved performance for recessed downlights is their suitability for insulation contact (IC). IC rated fixtures must be used whenever insulation will be in contact with the fixtures. Due to the range of types of insulation that may be used in a house, it is important to check that the IC fixture selected is considered acceptable for use with the insulation to be used. In particular, some downlight manufacturers have limitations on the use of their IC fixtures with cellulose or spray foam insulations. If in doubt about what type of recessed downlight to use, select ones rated ATIC for airtight insulation contact.
There are recessed downlight fixtures designed specifically for use in remodeling work. They generally do not meet the ATIC requirements. Because this guide is principally focused on new construction, this type of fixture is not listed.
Certain recessed downlights are designed to be adaptable to sloped ceiling installation; a necessary capability where lighting is designated in slope ceiling areas.
Dimming ballasts are available for some recessed downlight models. This is usually a special order item and is considerably more expensive than non-dimming models.
The following tables list recessed downlights that meet the requirements of the room-by-room designs. The listing provides a range of choices from a number of manufacturers that are well known for residential lighting. Fixtures from other manufacturers may be equally acceptable, however, they must provide performance characteristics similar to the listed features. These characteristics include: wattage and lamp type, high quality reflectors, ATIC capability (where required), and Energy Star rating.
