IBACOS: Integrated Building and Construction Solutions

High Performance Remodeling Strategies

An article entitled “Holistic Medicine for Existing Homes: Adopting a whole-house approach maximizes home performance” was published in the August 2003 edition of Professional Remodeler magazine. The article, written by Stacy Hunt, IBACOS’ Marketing Director, discusses the impact of remodeling on home performance, including energy efficiency.

The article explains that a whole-house approach requires that every change made to an existing home be considered in the context of its interaction with the building envelope, mechanical systems, landscaping, neighboring houses, orientation, and climate.

The article also emphasizes that those beginning remodeling projects take every step to maximize the performance of the home while doing no harm to the structure or occupants. To avoid doing harm requires a good understanding of building science. The article discusses the importance of education, testing, and prioritizing remodeling tasks cost effectively.

A case study is included in the article that details IBACOS’ work with the Building America program in improving energy performance and durability in the Green House renovation project in North Charleston, South Carolina.
