Building America’s Atlanta Pilot House Grand Opening Reception

On June 18th, Building America and Green Street Properties welcomed the Mayor of Atlanta and members of the Department of Energy, Tim Eastling and Jim Powell, to the opening of a Building America energy-efficient, high performance pilot home in Atlanta, Georgia. A large media presence was at hand for this well-attended event that offered the opportunity to learn more about the Building America program by perusing materials located in a special reading room.

The pilot home is located in Green Street Properties’ Glenwood Park community on the east side of Atlanta, Georgia. Green Street Properties fosters diverse, walkable, mixed-use, urban communities and is dedicated to environmentally sound practices in the design, construction, and operation of buildings.

The 3,200 square foot, three-story pilot home is among the first Building America projects built in partnership with Southface Energy Institute’s and the Greater Atlanta Home Builder's Association’s highest green builder program, the EarthCraft House™ program, a partnership which is leading to the creation of an advanced tier of EarthCraft House™ that will achieve 40% whole-house energy savings or greater compared to the Building America Benchmark. For this pilot home, IBACOS, a Building America team member, calculated a 50% savings compared to the Building America Benchmark when the home’s photovoltaic system is in use. In addition to achieving high energy efficiency, the pilot home will be featured in the August 2005 issue of Southern Living Magazine (2.6 million circulation) as an “Idea Home,” where its energy efficient and energy renewable technologies will be showcased to an estimated audience of 30,000 homeowners and industry professionals throughout the South.

The public will be able to tour the home from mid-June to early October.
